Plan ahead
Hiking is a great way to spend a day outdoors and a rewarding way to get exercise.
Make sure you are prepared before hitting the trail.
Footwear & clothing
Wear proper footwear that are waterproof; it can make all the difference.
Always take a hat and sunscreen even on a cloudy day.
Dress appropriately for the weather
Food & Water
Always take plenty of water on your trail.
Take nutrition food such as high caloric energy bars and food to eat.
First Aid kit
Take a small first aid kit; it should contain at least aspirin or ibuprofen, a few bandages, and some antibacterial cream, in a sealable plastic bag.
Basic Supplies
Remember to bring a compass and a good quality topographical map, with specific directions for your hike.
Weather
Get a weather forecast before hitting the trail
Sun protection
Wet weather gear – if there is a chance of rain
Poison Ivy
If you’re hiking in a region that has poison ivy, oak or sumac, make sure you are aware of what the plants look like and how to avoid them.
Let others know
Always let someone know, like your family, where you are going to hike.

Thanks for the list of items that will help make a hiking trip enjoyable. One more protective item to consider (depending on the location and time of year) is insect repellent. It can also turn a frustrating hike into a pleasurable one.
